The different types of fasteners

In sewing, there are lots of different types of fasteners, depending on the work you're making. They can be fabric fasteners, for a clutch bag for example or a curtain, but also metal fasteners, to make pretty leather goods accessories like a wallet or a bag.

It is therefore important initially to
determine the type of fastener required and evaluate its quality and strength.

In addition, you will also need to use
suitable thread and needles for your project.

Sew a clip for a pouch

For a cotton pouch for example, you might consider a beautiful fastening with the same fabric as your pouch.

You can place it on the slider of the closure or on one of the sides of your pouch, inserting it into the seams when assembling or slipping it into a half metal ring sewn onto your pouch.

To do this, simply
cut a strip of fabric to the desired length, fold it over on itself widthways and sew the sides to the reverse before closing.

It's ultra simple!

If your pouch is heavy, you can use another material for your fastener or insert a piece of cardboard inside, this will stiffen it.

The same type of fastener can also be used on a curtain.

A clip for baby's dummy

To avoid constantly losing your baby's dummy, you can sew a fastener for him in less than five minutes.

To make this fastener, you'll need
two strips of fabric, two snaps or simple buttons and a pretty clip. If you're using snaps, make sure you have the materials you need to assemble them (kit or KAM pliers).

Cut your fabric strips (for example 30x4cm) and sew them right sides together, leaving an opening. Clip the sides. Turn the fabric strip right side out and close it. Position your buttons (press studs or not), making a flap the length of your choice. All that's left for you to do is insert the clip and dummy! Feel free to
play around with styles to create something really cute.

As you will have realised, attachments are not necessarily difficult to make.
As with every sewing project, it's important to
gauge things right and prepare the materials required.
For slightly more complex fastenings, such as
the shoulder strap of a bag for example, don't hesitate to call on one of our Tillistes.
