Most of us have dressing rooms full of clothes we don't wear. We crowd, stack, multiply, out of love of fashion, fear of lack or addiction. At a time when over-consumption questions many of us, we at Tilli were also keen to plant our little seed in the wonderful - and sometimes unforgiving - world of fashion. We wanted to talk to you about responsible consumption and upcycling or the art of transforming your wardrobe.
Upcycling is the philosophy that nothing is lost, everything is transformed.
More than just recycling, upcycling enables used objects to be given a new, higher-quality life.
In the fashion sector, we use this term to transform old clothes that we no longer wear. Rather than throwing them away or giving them to charity, we seek to give them a new touch or even transform them completely so that they have a new use and regain an important place in our hearts.
Like any practice, upcycling requires skills and the first is undoubtedly imagination. To give new life to clothes, you need to be creative! Sewing comes in second place since once you've come up with the ideas, you have to move on to making them.
Many of you are afraid to plug in your sewing machine, but give yourself the privilege of trying! We advise you to start with simple projects that don't require a lot of sewing. For example, transforming old fabrics into pretty kitchen towels or eco-friendly make-up remover wipes. With a few snips of the scissors and four seams, the job will be done. This will help you gain confidence and be proud of your beginnings.
Little by little, you'll be able to increase the difficulty of the creations and transform your entire dressing room.
Jeans are one of the most common pieces in our wardrobes and they're also one of the most commonly used materials in upcycling. You can easily customise an old pair of jeans by reworking their hem or adding pretty embroidery or fabric patches to their thighs.
And you can also use your old jeans to create brand new pieces like unique, made-to-measure jackets, leather goods accessories or small decorative objects.
See if you can use one of your jeans as a guinea pig to start an upcycling project!
By taking up upcycling, you'll be making an impact on both your life and the world around you.
Indeed, upcycling allows you to recycle and thus avoid waste or overconsumption. It also allows you to develop your creativity and feel the joy and satisfaction of having created something new. By transforming your old clothes, you become your own stylist and create, day by day, a unique wardrobe that looks like you and belongs only to you. It's a very rewarding practice.
What's more, since upcycling invites us to consume less, it acts as a protector of nature and allows us to question many of our everyday practices.
