Upcycling is much more than just a trend. On a global and fashion scale, it represents a real little revolution! It is the art of giving new life to your used clothes by adding value to them. In other words, imagine an old pair of jeans that you've loved for years but can no longer wear today. Thanks to upcycling, not only will you be able to reuse those jeans, but you'll love them even more than before!
So you've decided to make a big clean-out of your wardrobe, but you're not quite sure where to start?
At Tilli, we advise you to make piles! In upcycling, you have the opportunity to customise or totally transform a garment. So why not make two different piles: one for clothes that are too damaged or out of fashion that you're sure you'll never wear again, and the other for those that simply lack a little something extra.
This will make it easier for you to think about what you need to do and inspire your creativity.
Ideally, you shouldn't throw anything away. Even old pieces of fabric can find a use (tea towels, sponges, make-up remover wipes, patches to cover holes...).
Take stock of your "To be customised" pile and pick the piece you love the most, or at least the one that inspires you the most. This will be your first upcycling project! If you're a beginner, choose a piece that doesn't require too much work.
Customisation, like creation, is infinite. Don't put any limits on yourself. The idea here is to give personality back to a garment and ensure that it (re)becomes one of the key pieces in your wardrobe.
So imagine something that looks like you, something you've perhaps always dreamed of? What would your ideal jacket look like? Your ideal jeans? Get your ideas down on paper and don't hesitate to visit the web, which is full of fantastic ideas.
You could <link>customise your jeans with pretty embroidery<link>, with fabric patches or textile paint. You could also imagine <link>placing beads on the turtleneck of your old winter jumper<link> or sewing a patch on your old rucksack.
Have an eye for detail.Style is often revealed in the very small things.
Now it's the turn of the 'To be transformed' pile. As you'd expect, this one requires a bit more time and skill. Here, we'll be looking to detract the primary use of your garment to create a new one. A shirt becomes a summer dress, a pair of jeans takes on the appearance of a backpack or handbag, old sheets are transformed into 100% eco-friendly household accessories...
Again, don't set yourself any limits and start with a project that's worthy of your skills. As you know, it's by doing that we learn.
You can also call in a professional, especially for pieces where the materials are more precious or the project is particularly close to your heart.
