Bad fit spares no one... Not even your curtains. We might think of it as a basic straight hem, but there are a few subtleties to consider before you take the plunge.
Do you want to shorten your curtains so they don't end up on the floor with dust bunnies? We'll explain it all in detail.

Préparation pour faire des ourlet sur des rideaux
Preparation
First and foremost, there are 3 essential steps before you start sewing.
1/ Gently iron your curtains to avoid any creases.
2/ Place them on curtain rods, paying particular attention to curtains with gathers.
3/ Leave them to rest for 48 hours to allow them to relax. This step is important, as it will make your curtains stretch a few centimetres. You can then pin them up without any unpleasant surprises.

Low hem
As you may have guessed, the hem you choose will determine how the curtains fall.
The low hem stops 0.5 cm above the floor. With heavy curtains, it is nobler to work the hem by hand. To do this, we recommend using a blind stitch, especially with unlined curtains to avoid marking them.

Brittle hem
The standard snap hem means that your curtain will make a crease on the floor. You may decide to give it a more rococo style by adding more material as shown in the photo. The choice is yours ;).
There's one detail we often tend to forget: tiebacks. Tiebacks are the tassels or hooks that allow you to tighten your curtains.

Curtains
Retouching curtains is a tricky business! It's a job that has to be done by machine, using a very fine stitch and edge to edge so that the hem doesn't show through.
You will often be given iron-on in the shop, but the result is not very aesthetic.

The plumb line
Lead wire is less and less common these days. We prefer to use the existing material of the curtain for a more aesthetic result.

On heavy curtains: hem by 15cm.
On sheers: double or triple the hem edge to edge.
L’Anecdote Tilliste
Photo Tilliste
