Leather is a noble, living and durable material, but only if you take good care of it.
If you've accidentally made a hole or tear in your leather, don't worry, there are methods you can use to repair it.
Leather is a living material that needs to be nourished.
It is therefore essential to maintain your leather regularly, whether it's the leather on your shoes, jacket, bag or sofa.
To do this, you can use special waxes for leather or make-up remover/baby milks. Using a cloth, you'll apply the wax or milk to the entire surface of your leather and do so as soon as you see that the leather is drying out.
This regular maintenance will keep your leather healthy and therefore strong and durable.
Now to the serious stuff, repairing your leather.
You should know that there are ready-made kits available. It's up to you to decide whether you already have materials to hand or whether you'd rather make the job easier for yourself.
In any case, and to repair the hole effectively, you'll need:
- a repair paste or resin
- a patch the size of the hole
- paint in the colour of the object in question
- glue
- a spatula
- a sponge.
Before you start, you need to prepare the leather by levelling the tear and removing any small threads sticking out with a chisel or tweezers. Make sure you "clean" the tear as best you can. Then remove the dust with a cloth.
Then cut a patch large enough to cover the entire tear and insert it on the inside using tweezers. Glue the two surfaces together and clean up any excess.
When the glue has dried, use the spatula to apply the repair paste to cover the patch and even out the surface. Apply several coats if the leather is thick.
To homogenise the colour of the resin to that of the object in question, you can use paint. If you haven't opted for the repair kit, make sure you buy some special leather paint.
Once dry, your repair will be almost invisible! The job is done and your leather has regained all its beauty.
