Would you like to sew your next tablecloth but don't know which hem to choose for the Finishing touches?
Here are the three most commonly used hems!
The classic hem is certainly the most commonly used hem for Finishing a tablecloth.
This is because it is very quick and easy to do, whether you are a sewing beginner or not.
This hem requires you to use 2cm along the entire edge of your fabric. Remember to include these in your starting yardage.
To make a classic hem, fold the fabric over 1cm and iron it. Be aware that the ironing step is extremely important in sewing. It ensures that the work is precise and well done.
Fold the fabric back onto itself by 1cm and iron. You can then come to pin and sew with a straight stitch.
If your tablecloth is round or oval, this hem will be more difficult and you will come and pin as you go, pulling slightly on the fabric to avoid creases.
Bias is a ribbon folded over itself that straddles the edge of the fabric. It is very useful for covering rounded edges and thus obtaining pretty Finishing.
Be aware that it will add a certain stiffness to the fall of your tablecloth and will not be suitable on thin fabrics.
Relatively easy to do, you will however need to take care to stitch straight along the bias.
You can find bias binding directly from haberdashers.
Overlocking is certainly the quickest option if you own a serger.
However, be aware that it won't provide as pretty a Finishing as bias binding or classic hemming. In fact, overlock hemming will be more visible and less elegant.
If you don't have a serger, you can use a bourdon stitch or a very tight zigzag stitch on your classic sewing machine.
Also prefer to use this option on fabrics that fray little.
