A zip that's broken, torn or won't close. We've all had to deal with it, and sometimes it can be a real headache.
Should you throw away your Trousers, jacket or bag?
Of course not! <A zip can be repaired and changed.
We explain how here.
If your zip slider is stuck, scrub the affected area with a pencil. If that doesn't work, use a cotton bud and oil with oil, Vaseline or Marseille soap.
Also check that none of the teeth on the fastener are damaged. If they are, you can realign them with long-nose pliers, just like the slide. Again, you can use Marseille soap.
If your zip is blocked by rust, you can soak it in lemon juice, bicarbonate of soda or white vinegar.
You've tried everything and nothing helps. Your zip is broken and you're going to have to change it.
Start by unstitching it with a zip opener, taking care to remove any topstitching too.
Place the new zip in its place and pin in place.
Sew the first tab and then the second.
Check that the fastener is working properly!
If the slider is broken, you should know that it is quite possible to repair it without changing the closure.
To do this, you'll start by removing the slider from the zip and buying a new one, taking care to select the same diameter and type as the previous one.
Then you'll insert the slide into the slider, from the bottom, move the slider up a few centimetres and replace the start or end stops with new ones. You can find them in haberdashery.
