Your down jacket is cracked and you're desperately watching the feathers escape one by one.
Before disaster strikes, plug the hole!
Here are five ways to repair your down jacket and ensure its survival this winter!
Whatever the size of the hole, don't try to sew up your down jacket, the fabric is far too thin and you'll only make the situation worse.
If feathers are escaping at the seam, you can simply apply a coat of colourless nail varnish. This will allow the seam to close up and the feathers to stay tucked inside!
If there's a real hole or tear in your down jacket, the only solution will be to iron-on. To do this, there are various options available to you:
- duck tape, is an adhesive tape that is inserted directly under the tear and sticks by tightening the lips of the tear.
- The self-adhesive spinnaker tape, usually used to repair boat sails, will undoubtedly repair your down jacket and do so in a durable manner.
- And finally, mylar, another sticker usually used to repair kites, will also do the trick.
If the hole is big enough, you can play with a fabric or patch to close it up. To do this, you'll need to use iron-on powder.
Sprinkle the torn area, place the patch on top and heat for ten seconds with your iron. This will automatically stick the patch over the hole and seal it up, in style!
Be sure to place a clean cloth over your down jacket to prevent it melting in the heat.
