How do I repair a moth hole in a jumper?

Our tips for
counter-attack
moths

Wool, cashmere, angora, mohair: the soft, warm fabrics we love to wear in winter are often also very popular with moths. These little butterflies actually take up residence in our wardrobes and quietly nibble away at our best clothes, particularly jumpers and other cardigans.

While there are a few tricks to keep moths out of our wardrobes, such as lavender or certain cedar or citronella-based essential oils, once they've started devouring our clothes, alternative medicine will have no effect...

Once the hole is made,
it is indeed necessary to move on to sewing and repairing the holes that the butterfly sows all over the place. So we polled our Tillistes on possible sewing tricks in terms of retouching, repairs but also clothing transformations to counter the invasion of holes by these little insects.

1. Putting your garment under the magnifying glass

Before anything else, and because good news never comes alone, it's important to scrutinise your clothes - even if it means turning them inside out - to check how many moth holes will need repairing.

Once the "where's Charlie?" game is over,
we move on to the repair stage also known as garment Re-knitting. Be careful, Re-knitting is extremely meticulous work that requires a lot of attention!
2. Recovering materials that have
yet been used as a meal

The first step is to try to recover the "healthy" mesh, i.e. the mesh that has not yet been attacked by the insect.

This is the one that will be used to rest the repair: so it's better to widen the hole a little rather than carry out the repair on fragile material that won't last long and will inevitably end up breaking, all the more so on everyday garments like jumpers!
3. Putting on your invisibility cloak

We then move on to the sewing. To recreate the missing stitches, you need to be very careful to have identical yarns, both in terms of material and colour.

If you can't find any, you'll need to extract small samples of thread from hidden areas of the garment, inside it for example. The aim is to make the repair work completely invisible!

4. Transform to shine

It's sometimes the case that certain moth holes are too big to be repaired using the Re-knitting technique. Don't panic, we have an alternative solution: transformation.

Sometimes it doesn't take much:
a patch or patch to iron-on or sew in place of the hole. As well as being solid, this technique is creative! Because yes, patches are no longer the ones your grandmother used to repair the hole in your Trousers, they're increasingly fashionable and trendy!

Another tip:
completely alter your garment by adding a different fabric, like a sort of patchwork. With this method, you're sure to hide the hole and not find the garment worn by someone else.

These tips are very interesting, but don't you know how to Re-knit a hole, sew a patch or make a patchwork quilt?
