Are your jeans too long and you'd like to shorten them?
Tilli explains how to shorten them while keeping the original hem!
First of all, you need to take your measurements to determine how much fabric you need to remove.
Put on your jeans, possibly your shoes too, and measure how high you want your jeans to stop. Mark the measurement with a pin.
Do this on one leg only. You'll do the second once the Trousers have been laid flat on a table. This will ensure that both legs are the same length.
Turn your jeans inside out.
Now that you've marked both legs of your jeans with the pins, you'll need to draw a second marking line. Let's say you want to remove 7.5 cm from your jeans and you know that a hem is usually 1.5 cm. The difference is 6 cm. As we want to keep your original hem, we need to subtract it and draw a second line, halfway, i.e. at 6cm. So you'll have two lines marked by your pins. The first at 7.5cm and the second at 6cm.
Now fold the hem of your jeans over the first 3cm marking line and put pins all around (you can then remove the ones on the 3cm marking line).
It's time to move on to the sewing machine and stitch your needle at the same level as your original hem. Be precise! Once you've sewn, you can turn your jeans inside out and give your new hem a good ironing!
That's it! Put on your jeans, your shoes and enjoy your success as you go strutting around town!
Great new jeans, aren't they?
