The fine weather is arriving, and with it our desire for lightness and freedom.
It's the perfect time to launch some sewing projects, and among them, we'd like to talk to you about skirts!
Short, long, straight, flared, puffed, pleated, the skirt remains one of the clothes that symbolise women, sometimes flush with the ground, sometimes flush with the buttocks!
Let's take a look together how to choose and sew your next skirt.
Let's face it, not all cuts suit all body types. You have to accept that!
For round figures, we prefer high-waisted skirts, with straight or trapeze cuts and avoid skirts with ruffles that risk increasing volume.
For V-shaped shapes (shoulders wider than the hips), choose low-waisted, flared skirts with ruffles, pleats, drapes, etc.
For H morphologies (shoulders in line with hips), the ideal is a mini skirt. We'll avoid cinched skirts or high waists.
For A morphologies (hips wider than shoulders) choose ultra-simple skirts (slightly flared, wrap...) and bet on the top!
And finally, for the X morphologies (shoulders in line with the hips and slim waist), well, any skirt is possible! Lucky you!
Once you've chosen the skirt pattern you want to make, try to find a pattern online or ask one of our Tillists. Just because it's your sewing project doesn't mean you can't get advice and support.
Take care to choose your fabric carefully, depending on the season and the cut of your skirt.
To find out your measurements, it's obviously essential to measure your waist size, the length of skirt you want and the height of the waistband (multiply by 2 and add 2cm for the seams). Depending on the type of skirt you choose, there may be other measurements to take, such as the radius.
If this is your very first creation, we advise you to put an elastic around your waist, it will be much easier. In fact, on a skirt, the waist is one of the parts that requires the most work.
Here we give you the sewing process for an extra simple skirt with an elastic waist.
First, cut your fabric in half to have a front piece and a back piece. Finish the edges.
Pin the front and back together, right sides together (the second side will be done at the end) and sew with a zigzag stitch.
If you like, you can gather the waistband of your skirt. Check out our special gathering article to learn how to gather properly!
Then stitch the elastic across the entire waist, right sides together and stitch again with a zigzag stitch.
Close the second side of the skirt by stitching right sides together.
Finally, hem the bottom of your skirt!
