Sewing a shirt is a complicated job, but it's also the dream of many of us.
So today, we're explaining how to sew a shirt that's ultra simple and accessible to beginner seamstresses.
To make your shirt, of course, you'll need a sewing machine, thread, scissors, a ruler, pins, a pattern and fabric! You can choose the fabric that suits you: cotton voile, poplin, crepe... But avoid stretchy fabric.
You'll find lots of patterns on the internet, try to choose one that isn't too complicated, perhaps without sleeve cuffs or buttonholes. And if you don't have a pattern, you can use a long-sleeved top that you like and trace its outline. All you have to do is alter the front.
First, you will cut all the pieces as shown on the pattern and mark the markings (neckline, armholes...).
Then make the shoulder seams and join the front and back.
Finally, for the sleeves, make the side seams to join them together and the bottom hem (you can of course make slits to fit the cuffs, but this technique is more complex and therefore less accessible to beginners). All you'll need to do now is assemble the sleeves. Fit them on and go gradually to give yourself the chance to rectify, if necessary.
For a traditional shirt, we'll mount a buttonhole on the front but in our case, we'd prefer to avoid it because again, it's a complex technique.
If what you like are more intricate shirts, with beautiful buttonholes or big puffy sleeves but you're not sure how to go about it, then we suggest you get in touch with one of our Tillists.
After all, some fashion pieces require the hands of professionals. With your Tilliste, you can customise your shirt and work on details that will make all the difference!
How cool is that?
