Gathering fabric is an essential sewing technique, but it can be scary. What if the thread breaks in the middle of your petticoat?
Today, Tilli explains how to sew your gathers properly to ensure you get the best result.
A quick reminder before we get started, gathers add volume to your garment. They are achieved by folding the fabric over itself many times.
There are different ways to make gathers, probably the best known being to run gathering threads over your fabric.
Using your sewing machine and a long straight stitch, you will make several lines of stitching on your fabric and then pull on the outer threads to form the gathers.
This technique requires you to have a serger at home. And if you're lucky enough, you'll love it because you can get gathers super fast.
Here, we'll increase the stitch length to the max, as well as the differential feed and the tension of the two threads.
Unlike the first technique, you will gather the fabric with very dense gathers that you will come to loosen later.
Check your sewing machine to see if you have a gathering foot! If so, it's a shoo-in because thanks to it, you'll get beautiful gathers in less than two and be able to gather miles of fabric.
