Turning a shirt into a skirt

The sun is shining and you're already thinking about your summer wardrobe. Fancy a new skirt? Why not make your own instead of buying one? Don't panic: you've certainly got just what you need in your dressing room! This is your chance to give a second life to one of your shirts.

Shirt transformed into skirt

What type of shirt can I use to create a skirt?

Good news: a priori,all shirts can be upcycled into skirts. But here are a few ideas to get you started:

- Have you recently fallen for a mottled shirt with a beautiful pattern or fabric, but it just doesn't fit? It's the perfect basis for a skirt!

- When you can, pick up a man's shirt. Their cut is generally looser, and will therefore offer more fabric;

- Last but not least: for sheer fabrics, be sure to use a lining.

A few easy ideas

Buttoned skirt

The simple button-up skirt

With its romantic side, and great everyday practicality, the button-up skirt has it all. To make it, ideally you'll need to recover as much fabric as possible by cutting at shoulder level.

The high-waisted skirt

For a slightly more assertive look, don't hesitate to shorten the length of your shirt-turned-skirt, by wearing it high-waisted. The little detail that makes all the difference: use one sleeve to create a beautifully knotted belt. Save the other sleeve for a future project!

For a little girl

Upcycling isn't just for you! Especially if the body of the garment is too narrow for your pelvis, that doesn't mean your shirt is lost. It's a safe bet that the youngest in the family will be delighted to receive a large garment.
