Repairing a vintage Burberry jacket with stoppage

Some pieces of our wardrobe are made to last. A fine wool coat, a well-cut gabardine trench coat, a cashmere sweater... These quality garments, when well cared for, can accompany us for decades.
And when they've belonged to a loved one, their value becomes priceless. A coat handed down by a relative, a jacket worn on a special occasion, a garment imbued with memories: we keep them not just for their style, but for what they represent.
So, despite all the care we take with them, they're not immune to a snag or a hole. Fortunately, to avoid further damage, there are repair solutions that can preserve these garments without altering their appearance. These include a rare and highly precise technique: invisible stoppage.
Our craftsmen suggested this method to Isabelle, a customer who came to us with a Burberry jacket that belonged to her mother. Unfortunately, one of the sleeves had a hole in it. Rather than opt for a conventional repair, she wanted a perfect, undetectable result. Our craftsman Daniela took care of the job with exceptional skill. Discover how she invisibly restored this precious piece.

A vintage jacket with sentimental value

This Burberry jacket has a special value for our customer: it belonged to her mother and has always been with her. It's a piece that's part of her memories, and she's seen her mother wear it every day. She wants it to last a long time, but moths have attacked one of the sleeves, leaving clearly visible holes. Having it repaired was a no-brainer, so she brought her jacket to our Paris workshop for a consultation with our specialist Daniela. Her fear was that any intervention would leave a visible trace and alter the aesthetics of the piece. Daniela introduced her to stoppage, a restoration technique that enables a totally invisible repair.

Invisible stoppage: an exceptional technique

Unlike a conventional repair that might leave a trace, invisible stoppage is a meticulous reconstitution of the original fabric, thread by thread. This technique restores the textile to its original state, making the repair undetectable. Only experienced craftsmen can accomplish this work, which requires patience, dexterity and a perfect knowledge of fibers and weaves.
Daniela first opened an internal seam to remove thread identical to that of the original fabric. Then, using a very fine needle, she painstakingly recreated the weave, interweaving each thread to restore the jacket to its original appearance. It's a time-consuming and extremely meticulous process, but the result is a totally invisible repair.

Invisible repair

After several hours of painstaking work, the sleeve is restored, and the fabric appears to have never been damaged. When I ran my hand over the repaired area, I couldn't tell where the holes had been. When she got her jacket back, our customer couldn't believe it. She found her garment as she had always known it, ready to be worn for many years to come. More than a repair, it was a transmission, a story that can continue.
