And yes, today we're going to talk sewing and more specifically about the dart technique which allows us to constrict a garment and fit it perfectly to our silhouette.
We can use darts on trousers, skirts, dresses, jackets or even coats, but this article will be devoted to blouses.
Chest darts, back darts, cuff darts, discover how to achieve these adjustments and have a super-fitted blouse!
The darts are materialized by a triangle or diamond on your pattern. They are usually sewn on after the fabric has been overcast.
First, you'll need to notch the ends of the darts and mark the point with a needle and then with a colored stitch on your fabric.
With a ruler and pencil, you can trace the dart on your fabric, joining the notches and the tip.
Then fold the dart in half, pin and stitch over the line with your machine.
Important note: for the darts, it's important to keep a length of thread at the end of the seam (approx. 5cm). You'll make a double knot with the threads, which you'll then cut.
To finish, simply loop the iron to mark your dart!
If you've got a blouse that's too wide and you want to add darts to adjust it to your waist, you're going to, first of all, need to spot where an adjustment is required. In the back? The chest?
It's ideal to have two people to do this work. You wear your blouse while the second person marks the marks to be adjusted.
In the same way as with a pattern, you can then trace the darts on the reverse of your fabric and sew them in.
Don't hesitate to ask one of our Tillists to carry out this process. While sewing the darts is a relatively simple technique, determining their markings and fitting a garment properly is a job that requires real professional skills.
