How do I make a maxi dress?

With the warmer weather just around the corner, the desire to wear dresses is on the rise. Dresses are so light, comfortable and feminine.

And for this season, it would be great to have a dress just for you. A unique dress that's all your own creation. So what do you think?

Choose the fabric for your dress

This is perhaps one of the most exciting parts of sewing. Faced with all those rolls of fabric, we're amazed and our creativity awakens.

If you're new to sewing, prefer fabrics made from natural fibers or part cotton, which will be easier to sew. On the other hand, avoid overly thick fabrics and silk.

Take
two to three meters for a long dress.

A little tip: don't forget to visit thrift stores, where you'll sometimes find some real nuggets of fabric.

Back home, don't forget to
clean your fabric by looping it through the machine.

The codes of the maxi dress and the choice of pattern

You know you want to sew a maxi dress but haven't decided on the cut yet.

In fact,
the choice is vast: straight, flared, puffed dress, long or short sleeves, V-neckline, halterneck, etc.

For
beginners, prefer a simple dress, straight and sleeveless, it will make your work easier. You can also use an old shirt that's too big and turn it into a dress.

You can find
patterns online or in haberdashery and if you want to try the adventure without a pattern, you can use a dress you already have or a t-shirt and skirt.

Sewing your maxi dress

For the sewing part, simply follow the instructions in the pattern, remembering to add the seam allowance (approx. 1cm) and hems (2cm).

For those who have chosen to work without a pattern,
simply transfer the reference pieces to your fabric. Don't hesitate to add darts, at the chest for example or at the waist, so that your dress fits well.

Press your seams and hems well for a perfect result.
