How do I repair a moth hole in a jumper?

Our tips for fighting moths

Wool, cashmere, angora, mohair: the soft, warm materials we love to wear in winter are often also very popular with moths. These little butterflies indeed take up residence in our closets and quietly nibble away at our finest garments, especially sweaters and other cardigans.

While there are a few tricks we can use to keep moths out of our wardrobes, such as lavender or certain essential oils based on cedar or citronella, once they've started devouring our clothes, alternative medicine will have no effect...

When the hole is made,
it is indeed necessary to move on to sewing and repairing the holes that the butterfly sows all over the place. So we polled our Tillistes on possible sewing tricks in terms of retouching, repairs but also clothing transformations to counter the hole invasion of these little insects.

1. Putting your garment under the magnifying glass

Before anything else, and because good news never comes alone, it's important to scrutinize your clothes - even if it means turning them inside out - to check the number of moth holes you'll need to repair.

Once the "where's Charlie?" game is over,
we move on to the repair stage also known as garment re-knitting. Be careful, re-knitting is extremely meticulous work that requires a lot of attention!
2. Recover material that has not yet been used as a meal

The first step is to try to recover the "healthy" mesh, i.e. that which has not yet been attacked by the insect.

It's the latter that will be used to rest the repair: so it's better to widen the hole a little than to carry out the repair on fragile material that won't last long and will inevitably end up breaking, all the more so on everyday garments like sweaters!
3. Putting on your invisibility cloak

Then it's on to the sewing. To recreate the missing stitches, it's important to have identical yarns, both in material and color.

If you can't find any, you'll need to extract small thread samples from hidden areas of the garment, inside the garment for example. The aim is to make the repair work totally invisible!

In our winter lookbook, you can discover the goldsmith's work carried out by Carole our Tilliste on Beryl's long wool dress, which had no fewer than 16 moth holes!

4. Transform to shine

Sometimes moth holes are too big to be repaired using the re-knitting technique. Don't panic, we have an alternative solution: transformation.

Sometimes it doesn't take much:
a patch or patch to iron-on or sew in place of the hole. As well as being sturdy, this technique is creative! Because yes, patches are no longer the ones your grandmother used to repair the hole in your trousers, they're increasingly fashionable and trendy!

Another tip:
totally modify your garment by adding a different fabric, like a kind of patchwork. With this method, you're sure to hide the hole and not find the garment worn by someone else.
