Retouching a coat

Have you ever fallen for a magnificent winter coat in size XL when you're only an M? Or, on the contrary, forced yourself into a size smaller than your usual one, whatever the cost?

You can't control what you fall in love with, but you can control what you change!

Discover here a few of the alterations you can make to a coat and enjoy your coup de coeur purchases in all circumstances.

Shortening or lengthening a coat

It's often easier to shorten a coat than to lengthen it.

Depending on its construction, the sewist will come
cut the bottom hem and cut the fabric to the desired height. It's important to pay attention to any patterns placed on the fabric and the height of pockets, if any. All these details need to be taken into account during alterations.

To
lengthen a coat, it will be necessary to add a fabric yoke - most often - different from that of the coat and thus create a more singular style. Unless the few centimeters of hemline margin are enough for the desired length.

Adjusting the size of a coat

To adjust the size of a coat, first check its construction.

The sewist may consider
taking up the side seams, taking care to avoid the formation of creases.

He may also
create darts on the sides or back of your coat to adjust the cut to your size.

Changing the sleeves on a coat

Sleeves that are too tight can be given more fullness by using the seam allowances left by manufacturers or through the use of fabric strips.

On the contrary, you can also
decrease the width of a sleeve by taking care to work the entire sleeve head.

In the same way, you can
shorten sleeves from the wrist or lengthen them with pretty cuffs.

Adding or removing a coat lining

You should know that it's entirely possible to make a lining on an unlined coat.
It represents some work, but it's
a usual touch-up and can prove very practical for your comfort and for the life of your coat.

Similarly, the sewist will be able to
remove a damaged lining or repair it.

Customise a coat with pockets or a hood

For customization-related alterations, we'd like to tell you that anything is possible, but this will obviously depend on the type of coat you have.

You could consider
adding a pocket on the lining or on the outside of your coat, but also adding a hood.

Why not also try
personalizing with pretty embroidered designs on different parts of your coat?
